Always A Cowboy In My Dreams
This is the newest of Syd’s seven releases on the Vision label. Following the successful format of his previous works this collection combines western classics with Syd’s own light hearted original compositions. The lyrics and melody of the title track, “Always a Cowboy in My Dreams”, create a vivid description worthy of the famed Lon Megargee artwork that dons the front cover of the CD. “Rise Along” is what Syd refers to as a traveling tune. It places the listener inside of an automobile rolling across the wide open western landscape early in the morning. Mother Nature and Syd’s versatile poetry greet you as summer passes into autumn. “Hill Country Jack” is written in the style of the old timey “folksy” story songs. It features multiple verses that take you through this cowboy tale from the exciting start to the satisfying finish. The boys don’t let you forget why they are called The Swing Riders either. This CD is full of fast swingin’ classics like “Route 66”, “Ghost Riders in The Sky” and “Old Chisholm Trail”. More moderate swing grooves are represented in “Along the Santa Fe Trail” and “Roundup in the Spring”. Syd is particular fond of his re-write of an obscure Shel Silverstein rustlers lullaby entitled “Ranching in the Evening”. So now’s the time to throw down your saddle and use it as a cowboy pillow while listening to what is already being hailed as some of Syd’s best work. Tip your hat down, close your eyes and turn up the music as you become part of the cowboys dream!
The Cowboy Sings
The fifth CD release from popular Cowboy Songster Syd Masters is a combination of all his different musical presentations. There are multiple tracks with his Swing Rider trio and several with the big band arrangement. There are two solo cuts as well with just him singing while playing his guitar, campfire style. Syd’s songwriting is well represented with five originals including the hits “Santa Fe Waltz” and “Under New Mexico Skies” which was recently crowned The Official New Mexico State Song. His ever present humor can be heard in the trail ride inspired “Frying Bacon In The Nude” along with the self-revealing western swing romp “One Step Away”. Syd covers three of his musical heroes with an award winning version of Marty Robbins “El Paso” as well as two somewhat obscure tunes by Johnny Cash and Hank Williams Senior. For the yodel fans there are several tracks showcasing the different styles of the cowboy and Swiss techniques. So saddle up and go for a musical ride while The Cowboy Sings!
Frontier Cowboy Songs
Both the title and front cover photo of this CD say it all about this batch of songs. Old west culture is represented through music as Syd has set out to do his part to help preserve these timeless cowboy melodies. Toss in three new tunes written by Syd that sound like they come from the pioneer days and this collection is campfire complete! While there are plenty of familiar classics such as “Red River Valley”, “Strawberry Roan” and “Red Wing”, there are also some more obscure titles that are sure to please the collector. During one of his research sessions Syd came across an old piece of basic sheet music from the early 1900’s without anyone’s name on it. From this he arranged and composed a chart for the studio. As far as we know, this is the only recording of this song to be found. As an avid outdoorsman and pardner of wildlife, Syd was honored to be asked to write the official song for his pals at the New Mexico Game and Fish Department. “The Game Warden” became the feature track for their long running television show and is used to open and close Game and Fish lectures and special events. In “Tumbleweed Kisses” Syd features solid three part harmony throughout which is reminiscent of that early frontier sound. The loping beat of “Ol’ Bo” tells the story of a young man crossing into Mexico on his grandfather’s horse with a humorous twist. So step down off your mount and gather ‘round the old timey cook fire. Pour yourself a cup and relax as Frontier Cowboy Songs keeps the coffee brewin’!
Cowboys On The Moon
Syd often refers to this as the project closest to his heart because he wrote and arranged all of the songs on the CD. Alibi Music Magazine proclaimed this to be one of the 10 best CD’s to buy for the entire year! This collection is a favorite among the dance crowd because of the many different tempos heard throughout the CD. From the high energy western swing beats of “Oklahoma Broke My heart” and “Swing Yer Sister” to the classic two step groove of “Old Milwaukee Made My Teardrops New” and “Out in the Country”. There are several campfire waltzes on board as well. Yodel groupies will once again be satisfied with the blistering fast “Yodel Rodeo”. It’s a song about rodeo riders who must yodel while riding bucking broncos around the arena and is filled with more yodels than should be allowed in one song! Syd’s ever present humor and wit are once again on display with the tracks “My Dog” and “Yodel Rodeo”. To date this CD has won more awards, been nominated more times, and been used in movie and television productions more often than any of his other works. Now grab your partner and dust off those boots as we go singin’, swingin’ and spinnin’ in orbit with Cowboys on the Moon!
Swingin’ Around The Christmas Tree Cowboy Style
This collection features many holiday classics done the cowboy way! “Christmas in New Mexico” is an original composition from Syd. His lyrics and melody paint the picture of a beautiful landscape and the devotion of its people found during the season of joy in the Land of Enchantment. Long time Swing Rider bassist Slim J wrote a wonderful piece of music which he contributed to this project. Syd will tell the story of how when he first heard this song he instantly knew it had to be on the CD. “Ridin’ Home For Christmas” is composed with that Old Timey spirit in mind and was the perfect match for Syd’s harmony arrangements. Everything from the vintage recording style to the retro album cover lets you know this choice is a must for your Christmas collection. Uncle Bob is the only musician to appear on all of Syd’s first six CD’s and this is his favorite of them all. So tie off your horse, brush the snow off your back and mosey on inside. They’re serving punch and cookies while the band keeps everyone Swingin’ Around The Christmas Tree!
